Technology is constantly evolving and changing the way we live, work, and learn. The dental field is no exception to this. Technological advances improve the overall patient experience by cutting down on procedure times and speeding up the healing process. One key piece of equipment on the forefront of dental technology is the CEREC machine. This machine has the capability to efficiently create ceramic fillings for decayed or damaged teeth, while matching the color of a natural tooth.
What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In layman's terms, this basically means that this machine can make a high-quality, natural looking ceramic tooth conveniently in just one appointment, so the patient doesn't have to make multiple trips to the dentist.
How does the CEREC machine work?
Using CAD/CAM (which stands for Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, the CEREC machine combines three key pieces of equipment (computer, milling machine, and camera) seamlessly in one machine. First, using a specialized camera the dentist will take a picture of the decayed or damaged tooth. The image is then uploaded to a color computer screen, where it is displayed for the dentist who begins the restoration process using the CAD technology to start creating a blueprint. Once the design for the restoration is laid out, the CAM technology begins the molding process. The dentist will then, through the process of bonding, attach the new ceramic tooth to the remaining natural tooth in the patient. All of these steps are completed in about an hour.

With CEREC patients can have precise, natural looking tooth repairs, instead of silver or metal fillings, in just one visit. The high quality ceramic fillings created with the CEREC machine seamlessly adhere to the existing tooth and are anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant.
